Carolyn A Brent On The Eventuality of Becoming Caregiver to Your Parent

By BobEngland

As the baby boomers get older, more and more Americans are having to turn caregiver to their parents. There are around 75 million living in the US that need care now, and 65 million children who have turned into caregivers. But there’s a problem, that being most aren’t prepared to become caregivers. They don’t have the resources, or the support to care for their parents effectively.

That’s what inspired Carolyn A Brent to write the bestselling book Why Wait? The Baby-Boomers Guide to Preparing Emotionally, Financially and Legally for a Parent’s Death.America's CareGiver Empowerment Strategist 1 The book chronicles Carolyn’s turn as caregiver for her own father, and the journey she undertook caring for her father who was diagnosed with dementia in 1997.

Brent discovered just how difficult coping with family illness could be, as she turned caregiver for the first time. The lack of support, and information out there was startling, and the road was very difficult as Brent would struggle to find the right resources to learn more about becoming a caregiver.

That’s what inspired Carolyn A Brent to take on the cause of helping others care for their parents, and avoid the pitfalls and difficulties that Carolyn herself had to experience. In 2009 she created the Grandpa’s Dream organization. A non-profit dedicated to publishing books, creating a website, and even holding speaking engagements to provide an education to other caregivers.

Brent’s unique insights helped influence the dissemination of information, because of her background in pharmaceutical medicine. Carolyn spent more than 17 years in the industry, and that gave her more of an insight into illness, and the care for someone suffering with one.

The reality is most people will have to turn caregiver for their parents sooner or later. Grandpa’s Dream is all about helping those children find appropriate resources to aid in the care of their parents. Carolyn A Brent also established a website and online support network to provide even more help to caregivers and their parents. Including helpful resources and more in depth guides to help prepare families care for one another.

These resources both help family members provide a greater quality of care, but also ensure that the elderly can remain in their own homes for longer as well. Carolyn A Brent has been an advocate for elder care legislation for many years now, so helping others provide a higher standard of care is close to the heart. The resources she has worked hard to provide has already helped thousands of families with the resources they need to become exceptional caregivers.
