THE CAREGIVER’S COMPANION:
Caring for Your Loved One Medically, Financially and Emotionally While Caring for Yourself

Chapter  E L E V E N

The Caregiver’s Cheat Sheet

This book has addressed many of the facets of caregiving, but it doesn’t hurt to have a list of reminders—a cheat sheet, if you will— to help guide you on your journey.

The following advice comes from the current and former caregivers around the world whom I have interviewed. They have shared recommendations that will help you better act and advocate for yourself and your loved one so you can avoid the pitfalls, be healthier and happier and more resilient, have a more rewarding experience and provide outstanding care.

(Sample)

Banishing the guilt (when you:)

  • 1. Take a well-needed vacation.
  • 2. Give yourself permission to say only positive things about yourself.
  • 3. Decide to never be a caregiver again.
  • 4. Wish your loved one was out of his or her pain and was in a better place.
  • 5. Go out on a date.
  • 6. Want to have some private time for yourself.
  • 7. Put your work, family and personal life back in balance.
  • 8. Move your loved one from place to place because no facility will accept him or her.
  • 9. Allow your loved one to help you with household chores.
  • 10. Spend even a small amount of money on yourself.
  • 11. Do not know what questions you should ask the doctors.

and much more….
